What is fraud and how can you the consumer protect yourself? This is when someone purposely falsely misrepresents something in order to cheat others. It is usually done for monetary gain. “White collar criminals” who have specialized knowledge in their field and are often business services usually commit this. They invoke trust in their clients by posing as professional business organizations. These false companies steal 1000s of dollars worth of funds from individuals and businesses every year.

So how do you protect yourself from consumer fraud? Here are some ways:

 

·        Look carefully before signing anything

·        Be sure you are using a secure (SSL) site for online payments

·        Do not give out your financial or secure information by email

·        Go through the proper channels when you need to do a charge back-Your credit card company and bank

·        Monitor your financial records carefully

·        Be especially careful when using online banking-report any extra or unusual charges immediately to your bank.

·        Research any business opportunity that you want to join-if it looks too good it probably is not true.
